Why Is This Needed?
Once a solar solution has been installed, it is important to keep the solar panels clean. Any dust that collects on the panels will reduce the amount of power generated, which in turn extends the payback period of your solar solution.
Solar panels should be cleaned at least once per month. However, depending on the amount of dust in your area, you may need to do this more often.
Requirements
1. Turn Off The Inverter
The solar inverter needs to be shut down, so that no power is generated from the solar panels.
2. Minimise Difference in Temperature
The difference in temperature between the water used for cleaning and the solar panels should be minimise. Cleaning hot panels in the middle of the day with cold water increases the risks of cracks forming due to a sudden change in temperature.
3. Safety Equipment
Utilise safety equipment to prevent any injuries due to a fall from the roof.
4. Avoid Underside
The underside of the solar panels should not have any contact with water, as the wiring is present there. This can lead to an electrical short-circuit and damage to your solar installations.
Cleaning Approaches
Here are a few approaches to cleaning:
Water, Soap and Sponge
Mild soap and water, applied with a soft sponge, work well in cleaning the solar panels.
Water Hose
If water pressure is sufficient, a hose can be used to clean the panels. However, one needs to be careful about water splashing onto the underside of panels.
